Traffic eines Landes blockieren – und den Googlebot gleich mit?

John Mueller von Google rät Website-Betreibern, darauf zu achten, dass sie den Googlebot nicht blockieren, wenn sie sich dafür entscheiden, den Traffic aus einem ganzen Land zu blockieren. Mueller hat dieses Thema in der letzten Woche zweimal angesprochen. Einmal kam es während des Google Search Central SEO Hangouts am 9. April zur Sprache und auch in einem Reddit-Thread wurde es thematisiert.

Während des Search Central Hangouts stellte ein Website-Besitzer eine Frage an Mueller über das Blockieren eines Landes, in dem er eine große Menge an Bot-Traffic erhält.

Website-Besitzer können einzelne Länder blockieren und tun dies auch, wenn sie problematischen Traffic erhalten. Mueller, der in der Schweiz lebt, ist persönlich nicht von dieser Idee begeistert, aber er versteht, warum die Leute es tun:

“I’ve heard some people block individual countries because they see a lot of problematic traffic from individual countries. Personally I don’t really like that approach because Switzerland is one of those countries as well that people tend to say, “oh this is another European country, I will block it.”

So I don’t like it from a personal point of view. But if you’re seeing significant issues with traffic from an individual country then maybe that makes sense.”

Aus SEO-Perspektive ist die wichtigste Überlegung hier, den Googlebot nicht am Crawlen einer Website zu hindern. Googlebot crawlt in der Regel Websites aus den USA. Wenn eine Website also den Traffic aus den USA blockiert, wird das höchstwahrscheinlich zu Problemen führen.

Website-Besitzer können einen Reverse-DNS-Lookup durchführen, um festzustellen, von wo aus der Googlebot ihre Website crawlt. Mueller sagt, dass es selten vorkommt, dass Googlebot eine Website von mehreren Standorten aus crawlen würde.

Schlussendlich liegt es an den Website-Besitzern zu entscheiden, ob sie den Traffic aus einem ganzen Land blockieren wollen. Websites können ihre Probleme mit problematischem Traffic lösen, aber sie könnten gleichzeitig auch legitime User blockieren.

“So based on that, the important point for search is really that you’re not blocking users from the country where Googlebot is crawling from. If you’re blocking them from other countries that’s kind of up to you. It also means that you might be blocking legitimate users from those countries so I wouldn’t just randomly do that, but if you’re seeing significant issues that might be an approach.”

Andere Sicht auf das Blockieren des Traffics eines Landes & Googlebot

Auf Reddit hat ein Website-Inhaber einen Thread gepostet, in dem er fragt, ob er seine Rankings in einem bestimmten Land reduzieren und/oder den Traffic aus einem bestimmten Land blockieren kann. Der Website-Besitzer stellt fest, dass er eine Menge Hacking-Versuche aus einem bestimmten Land erhält und diesem Problem ein Ende setzen möchte.

Muellers Antwort stimmt mit dem Ratschlag überein, der während des Search Central Hangouts gegeben wurde.

“You can’t reduce your rankings in one country in Google. You could set geotargeting to a different country, but that’s not certain to reduce the rankings in Indonesia (and if it did, it would affect all other countries). The only thing I’m aware of which is kinda country-limiting is video structured data, which would affect how a page is shown in video search & the video universal results (assuming you have a video on the page).

Blocking all users in a specific country is doable provided you don’t block the country where Google is crawling your site from (I’m pretty certain we don’t crawl from Indonesia). It always feels like a bad move though – you might be blocking some unwanted users, but you’re also blocking people who might be relevant to your site. IMO if you’re worried about hackers from one country, you should fix the security issues, not try to block that country. It’s trivial for anyone that’s dedicated to circumvent a country-block.”

Sollten Sie also ebenfalls Probleme mit schlechtem Traffic aus bestimmten Ländern haben, sollten Sie sich genaustens überlegen, ob Sie diese tatsächlich blockieren wollen. Falls ja, prüfen Sie zunächst, ob Sie damit nicht auch den Googlebot aussperren.
